Product Description This small, portable player uses embedded flash memory instead of a rotating hard drive and plays for up to 15 continuous hours on a single AAA battery. The new Digital Audio Players combine crystal-clear sound with a sleek design and sport a three-button/one-joystick design and easy-to-navigate user interface. They feature MP3, Windows Media file and Windows Media-based DRM file playback, FM radio and voice recording and can double as a USB data storage device.

Recommended for special use June 17, 2008 First, I own an iPod mini for general use and an iPod shuffle for use in the gym.
I needed a player with an AB function. This function allows you to set up a continuous repeat of any section of an audio file (during playback, press the AB button at the start of the part that you want to repeat, then press the AB button again at the end of the part to repeat. Pressing AB a third time clears the repeat). Its a very simple function, but extremely useful for learning/deciphering parts of songs. When CD players first came out, the AB function was ubiquitous. However, it has virtually disappeared over the last decade or so.
I compared many players (with AB buttons) during my research. I chose the SanDisk for the following reasons: 1. Price.
2. Brand. SanDisk was the developer of this solid state memory. Though that doesn't mean their audio expertise/execution would be expected to be good, it certainly means that they know how to build systems around their memory. Also, SanDisk is a North American company (most of the devices with AB functionality were from Asia) - I figured any warrantee would be more easily handled from SanDisk.
3. Reviews of Audio Quality. I don't need fantastic quality. That said, I had a fairly bad experience with an older voice recorder that had nearly intolerable sound. This SanDisk unit actually had some good Audio reviews.
Findings. 1. AB - works as expected (of course) 2. It DOES sound great. 3. FM radio and voice recording are nice-to-have extras (and they work well)
So it covers my basic requirements. However, I only gave 4 out of 5 for the following reasons:
1. Its an MP3 player. But it SAYS its an MP3 player. I needed to get software (free) to convert my Apple iTunes format music to MP3. Obviously, to most other users this would not be an issue. To me its not MUCH of an issue, but it IS an extra step.
2. Switching from FM Radio back to Audio Player is a bit flakey. This is the big issue. Once in FM Radio, I have to fiddle around quite a bit to get it back to Audio Player (yes, I read the manual). It seems to me like a firmware glitch.... Anyways, for me, since I did not get this player for the FM Radio, its not that much of a problem. However, for other's it may be a significant problem.
Still a great purchase over a year and a half later January 12, 2008 I bought this player to take with me when I was a freshman in college. Now, halfway through my junior year, it's still in awesome condition. I mostly use it when I go to the gym and sometimes when I'm driving I plug it into a tape adapter and it sounds really great. I don't ever use the voice recording function, but I'm sure it could be useful if you wanted to use it. If I drop it (which I do a LOT at the gym), the little protective case is good because the player is so small it can get banged around easily. It automatically shuts off when dropped, which may or may not be a good thing. Also there is a handy lock function, so you don't have to worry about accidentally turning it on and wasting the batteries. (Another good point - one AAA battery lasts a LONG time!) I don't use the earphones that came with it, however. I bought another pair because earbuds never seem to suit me.
However, a couple complaints. When I bought it, it cost $80, which now is a ridiculous amount of money for only 512 mb, so it can only hold 5-6 CDs worth of music. Now, of course, it's easier and cheaper to get players with more memory. Also I don't like how when it's set on shuffle, when I turn it off and back on, it's actually shuffled to another point in another song, so if it accidentally gets dropped, then I will turn it back on and it will be in another song, which I don't like at all!
Overall a great product, but if I could do it again I would buy the same one with a much bigger memory.
Great MP3 player - Bad earphones August 5, 2007 I love this MP3 player. I bought this to use when mowing and it works perfect. The original earphones had great sound but the 2nd time I used them, the cord fell out of one earpiece. I found a really good pair to replace them and now I wouldn't take anything for this player. It was a refurbished player but works like a new one. I highly recommend this item but be prepared, you may want to purchase a more durable set of earphones along with it. Still a great bargain for the price.
Baffling May 12, 2007 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
Bought this for my husband for Christmas. It's May, and we still haven't figured out how to use it.
Great Value with 1 drawback April 8, 2007 This device is great for the price. I download licensed WMA (Plays for Sure) books from Netlib. My plan was to use the FM radio for morning runs, then switch to the currently loaded book for my afternoon walk. The problem I have is that thw unit reverts back to the beginning of the book when switching from radio to song (book) mode. I haven't found a way to defeat this or a link to contact Sandisk by e-mail to question this.
