5 out of 5 stars Great MP3 Player but...   October 6, 2008
I bought this player in Jan 08 because I was going to be working in the bush where there was no radio or TV (Gawd what is this world coming to?) Anyway, I plunked in 1200 songs and hit the road. Actually that's what the player kept doing. That was because I couldn't get a holder for the player and it kept falling out of my shirt pocket everytime I bent over.
Here's the good:
1. The player is easy to use albeit it took a bit to get used to. The click on each side of the player works well.
2. The battery lasted all day at work without problems.
3. Lots of capacity

The Not so good:
1. It took some time to figure out all the controls like repeat etc, even after using downloaded manual.
2. Can't complain about the I Clix service... They have NONE! They don't answer emails and they don't even have a holder for the player.
3. I found the software difficult to manipulate. Adding the songs in the fashion I wanted to simplify retrieval was difficult.
4. Couldn't get a case for this player and it was always bouncing off the floor when it dropped out of my pocket. (tough little player)

What's even better:
I have a Motorola Razor phone with a leather case. The leather case fits the Iriver Clix 8 like a glove. Oh Happy day. Finally I can go for a bike ride and hook it onto my waist.

I purchased Shure earphones at the same time and wasn't surprised by the quality. The reproduction from the earphones was awesome.

Would I recommend this product? Absolutely!

4 out of 5 stars Sleek, beautiful mp3 player   August 18, 2008
I bought this mp3 player for my wife. I'm more a fan of the Cowon D2, but for her, this player was perfect. The player is surprisingly small, about the size of a credit card, and a third of an inch thick. It is small enough that my wife can hold it with one hand and still use the controls. This is really useful for when she rides the El and needs one hand to hold on.

The best feature of the player is definitely the interface. The controls are smooth, intuitive, and as I mentioned before, can be accessed using only one hand if necessary.

The sound quality is very respectable, certainly better than what Apple has to offer. The equalizer works well, but doesn't have as many bands as I would prefer.

This is definitely the winner of the mp3 beauty pageant. I think it is sleeker and better looking than the Apple Nano or Touch, the Cowon D2, and the Zune. I know there are more important things to look for in a PMP, but having one that is aesthetically pleasing is important too.

A few complaints:

This player suffers from some of the same problems as most. It relies on a proprietary software to load it with music, in this case, Windows Media Player. I prefer players that do not require you to use arbitrary software to use them. In my opinion, all media players should be universal plug and play devices.

The Clix II doesn't have a memory expansion slot. It would be nice to have the option of adding a micro SDHC for an additional 4gb of memory, or even a SDHC for up to 16gbs!

Overall, this is a beautifully designed, easy to use, quality mp3 player with admirable sound quality. If you don't mind being limited to 8gb of storage, and also don't mind using WMP to sync music to the player, then this is a great choice. If you want a player with expandable memory and no proprietary software, get yourself a Cowon D2.

4 out of 5 stars iPod killer? iPods are not even in the same league.   August 15, 2008
Have had
(1) Creative Zen 20GB (the early version with metal casing): Crystal clear sound, solid bass (not your artificial upper base boom). A 5-foot drop unto concrete killed the hard drive.
(2) Creative Zen Micro 4GB: a step-down in sound quality from its older brother. Headphone jack's internal wiring came lose after about 9 mo. Lost a channel.
(3) iPod Nano 4GB: Worst sound among the three, but, hey, my wife got it as a gift, and she doesn't use it.
Also used a HP PDA and a HTC Smartphone as makeshift MP3 player.

Paired the above with Sony MDR earbuds EX51, 71 & 81, which had silicon earpieces that fall off to easily, and flimsy wires that can't stand up to abuses.

Spend about 3 hr. on my daily commute, almost always listening to music on both the bus rides and walking through busy streets of NYC.

When my Sony EX81 lost a channel, I decided to give Shure a try. The Shure E110 (the cheapest in their line), with superior sound reproduction and insulation, allows me to hear much much more... to the point that the inferior sound quality of the iPod became too apparent.

Now, finally, comes the iriver clix.

After researching for a iPod replacement, the Gen2 clix and Creative Zen 8GB became the top 2 contenders. Remembering the nice sound and user interface the 1st. generation clix had (gave 1 to mom as a gift, & loaded music & tested the sound for her), I went with Gen2 clix. Besides, I figure I should try something else after owning 2 Creative Zen.

Boy, am I glad.

I was smiling from ear to ear after hearing a few bars on the clix through Shure. Music became alive. You don't hear music, you hear musicians. The human element of music that can be heard is what defines good stereo -- the phrasing, the dynamics, the rythm... From pop to bossa nova, from Verdi to Rachmaninov... they are all good.

iPod killer? There's no need for clix to kill iPods, clix is too busy playing music. iPods should all just bow down in the presence of clix, like sun worshipers bow down before the sun.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Player!!!   August 11, 2008
I've had the Iriver Clix for several months now and the sound is amazing. I've had an H10 prior to this player which was stolen from me and personally I think Iriver has the best sound quality of any mp3 player. That's saying a lot when you consider the fact that mp3 files are compressed anyway. Some sound quality is being lossed simply because information is being stripped during the compression process. Iriver makes up for this by engineering an SRS Wow sound system into all of their players which really delivers excellent sound in their mp3 players. For best results I would recommend purchasing a pair of Sennheiser earphones as the earphones that come with the Clix are crappy and really don't do it any justice at all. I have a pair of Sennheiser MX560's and they sound great. I've owned an Ipod Nano and I would have to admit that Ipods have better visuals and gadgets if you're into movies and videos. The Iriver Clix blows Ipod away in the sound category. Hands down. Plus, with Ipods you're limited because you can only use Apple software from Itunes whereas with Iriver you can use any music files. I use my Iriver Clix strictly for music so I can't speak on it's video capabilities. I was told that videos have to be converted to a special program in order to be synced into the Iriver Clix. Ipod has a much easier interface for syncing videos and movies. I have to give them credit for that. For that reason I would not recommend the Clix for someone who wants music videos or movies on their player. As far as syncing music it's pretty user friendly. I sync all my songs with Windows Media Player and it works fine. Iriver seems to have solved the annoying problem of the H10's and older models not playing back the songs in the order they were on the CD. With the old H10, I would have to number the songs in Windows in the order I wanted to hear them before I synced them. 01, 02, 03 and so on. With the Clix you no longer have to do this. It automatically syncs the songs in album play order assuming of course that you haven't altered them in Windows. It's also interesting to note that the Clix just like the old H10 includes an FM radio. Something that's nonexistent in mp3 players. I hardly ever use it but its good for those times where a good morning show is on the radio on my way to work and I want to hear the rest of it when I get to work. Bottom line, the Iriver Clix is a good solid mp3 player for those of use who are music and sound lovers. All visual, video and movie lovers should consider purchasing an Ipod. Overall a great player. Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet player!   May 29, 2008
I love my Iriver Clix2! Here's what I love most about it:
- plays ogg vorbis (fully compatible with tags and all); thus you can fit more high-quality music onto the player; with a mix of ogg and mp3 files, I've got it nearly full with about 130 hours of music
- no touch screen, so I can easily work it in my pocket, or while I'm driving (i.e. without looking at it)
- it looks really cool, and is very customizable (fonts, wallpapers)
- excellent sound
- 8 GB *flash* drive, so you don't have to worry about shaking or vibrating it

This is my third mp3 player from Iriver. The first was the Rio Volt, which was an mp3 CD player actually made by Iriver and sold under the Rio name. The second was a much improved mp3 CD player (the IMP-300 I think it was). This player is another excellent unit. And the price for an 8GB unit was comparable to others. It also rated highly at CNET.

Two problems I've encountered, and their solutions: It caused Winamp to close every time I connected it to my player, so I downloaded and installed the free player called MediaMonkey. The Clix2 syncs beautifully with MediaMonkey. It's great. Second, I found the battery life to be a little short, so I changed the setting such that it fully shuts down when you turn it off, instead of going into standby. The only drawback is that it doesn't remember what song you were in the midst of when you turn it on next, but that's tolerable, and now the battery seems to last much longer.

An interesting idea: I stuck velcro to the back of the Clix2, and then accopanying pieces of velcro on my desk and in my car so that I can stick it various places. Works great!

I highly recommend this player.
