3 out of 5 stars mixed feelings as quality fades   January 7, 2009
I first purchased a pair of these years ago. At two years, the right channel died. Bought a new pair. They lasted another two years, until mis-placed.
The latest pair from Amazon came with a dead right channel, it would cut in and out as you moved your head. The replacements are holding up fine, but I now view these as a consumable. Figure a couples of years use.

I like the sound quality, and the fit works well for me.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible performance and value   January 6, 2009
These are great value for the money. I recommend these earbuds without reservation. They work well in the noisy gym and on the plane to cut out all the distracting noise. The music sounds good but you must seat the earphone down into the ear canal and get a seal. My husband tried mine and liked them better than his Bose so bought his own pair. If you are looking for sound studio music reproduction go for the $400 Shures.

5 out of 5 stars Great Earphones   December 31, 2008
As most others have stated, this is a great pair of in-earphones. The quality is fantastic, and the sound isolation is wonderful. You have to push them fairly deep into your ear (as some people have mentioned), and at first I was a bit worried by it, but I got used to it within a couple days easily, and actually began to prefer it that way. They can also be used as ear plugs quite efficiently for those that want time to concentrate in loud places.

5 out of 5 stars The Bass is there--if it fits in your ear   December 24, 2008
I just got these Etymotic Research ER6i Isolator In-Ear Earphones (White) today, so I can't speak to concerns about durability or maintenance. I tried the pre-mounted 3 flange plastic tips, but found them a bit small for my ears. I cautiously but easily switched to the small foam tips, grabbed my I-Pod 80 gig classic, and fired up some Yes music.

First thing I noticed: isolation is remarkable. With these in and no music playing I can hear and understand TV at moderate volume, and during quiet passages I can tell the TV is on without being able to make out the sound, but with a medium to loud song playing, I can't hear anything other than the music. During a halfway loud song, I turned up the volume on the TV and couldn't hear a sound from the TV at all.

I tested the studio versions of "The Fish" and "Heart of the Sunrise"--both featuring bass guitar--due to reviews citing poor bass response. I have to disagree with the critics. I love bass, and I found the low notes tight, well formed and strong so they pop within the mix without overwhelming it. Mids are clear and pure and highs are bright and crisp. These phones deliver a balanced, open, true sound across the entire range.

I think the problems people report may come from either poor fit in the ear, or perhaps counterfeit phones. The genuine phones were easy to fit (for me at least), and deliver great sound--including bass, most complete isolation from background noise, and remarkable detail. You can hear Steve Howe breathing during Mood for a Day--and his guitar work sparkles and resonates with full tones.

One observation about fit and comfort, I noticed an "ear popping" sensation when swallowing at first, sort of like riding in a plane taking off--but not as disconcerting as that. I got used to this pretty quickly, so that I could test this by moving my jaw around but otherwise it faded from my awareness.

1 out of 5 stars Not durable   November 17, 2008

The wires are too flimsy. As a result, these only lasted a few months before they stopped working.
