An awesome netbook December 2, 2008 This Asus netbook has lived up to its reviews. It has enough speed and drive space for my net surfing and applications needs. It travels well due to its light weight and the battery truly lasts an entire days' worth of work. I have gotten 6 hours+ from one charge; of course, during that time I turn off the wireless when I don't need it. I like the fact it's packed with Windows XP: I have older applications I need to run and I'm sure they will not run under Vista. I'm glad I decided to buy this netbook and not another full size laptop. I LOVE IT!
This is such a great PC! December 2, 2008 I recently purchased the ASUS 1000HA because I needed a portable computer to do on-the-fly work for a hospital I work at, and for light web surfing. I get called at random times when I'm off work to do this and that so I needed a laptop that wasn't a burden to carry around, but was also up the task of running the software I use for work.
I was skeptical about a 10" screen, but I took a chance on it and after seeing it in person it is fantastic. It's just the right size. It's not too small where you would have trouble reading it, but it's big enough so that screen doesn't look all jumbled up.
The keyboard seems great so far. It's just a little smaller than a regular laptop keyboard. The keys aren't "clicky" like some keyboards can be. That drives me crazy. The different power modes are great to get the most of out the battery. I can get a good 5+ hours in power saving mode with the screen brightness turned down to 50%. The multi-gesture track pad is so great. If you've used a mac then you know what I'm talking about. All in all this is a great system.
I do think you should spring for the 2gb ram upgrade from OCZ on Amazon. I could have several tabs open in Firefox and try to do other things and have a little stutter to the system, but the ram upgrade solved that. I plan on getting a slim USB-powered portable DVD-burner to go with it. I haven't had a need for the CD/DVD drive yet, but I'd like to have it just in case.
I give 4.5 stars for this notebook. Here is why... December 2, 2008 I finally decided to write a review for this nice notebook. I know that there are a lot of people were trying to write a review without putting their hands on this product. So it was hard for me to decide if I need it or not. But I decided to get it. Now after owning it for approx. 3 weeks I can say what I think and how I rate this notebook. Here is my pros vs. cons list. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROS: 1.Decent size - 10" screen is better (IMHO) then 8.9" screen. 2.Powerful enough (1 GB Ram and 160 GB HD) for daily operations (web surfing, video chat, email, some games, watching online movies). 3. Light weight 4. Build quality is great. 5. Build in 1.3 MP camera 6. Decent keyboard size 7. Comes with sleeve case in the box (you don't need to buy one). 8 Wi-Fi works great. In previous reviews I saw bad comments on Wi-Fi. It finds and connects just as fast as my other Dell and Lenovo notebooks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONS: 1. Touch pad buttons are too stiff - need to push really hard to use them 2. Hard to keep it clean (outside) - there are always fingerprints on the external cover. It is mirror like and I have to wipe it every time I put my hands on it. 3. Build-in software to update drivers and bios are not user friendly. It will show you all of Asus bios releases and you need to make sure that you are using correct (latest) bios version. If you choose wrong version from the list, computer will crash during reboot. BTW if you rung upgrade, you dont need to to graduate bios upgrade. Just select last version from the list. 4. Battery life - before upgrading bios my battery meter was showing between 6 and 7 hours of life. Now after upgrade I see only 3 hours. Need to check with support why it happened. 5. There is no CD-rom drive. Asus provides CD-Rom software with purchase, but there is no way of using it. You need to buy it as an accessory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- So I think 4.5 stars is a fair rating for this product. I'm sure that later on for future EEE models there will be modifications and upgrades done to fix/enhance the product.
Excellent small computer December 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an excellent laptop. The keyboard is large enough for me (an adult male) to type comfortably. It is plenty fast for web browsing, email, card games, etc. I typically get 5-6 hours on one battery charge. It has enough hard drive space and RAM to do anything I need except gaming.
When I am going to work for an entire day on the computer, I plug it into my external monitor and USB keyboard. But when I want to take it with me, it is small, light, and very easily portable. I replaced my desktop PC with this one and I have no regrets.
Good things come in small packages! December 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I can only add a few things to the many good things already said.
This is a sweet laptop. But if you are used to large screens - for instance I have a 24" LCD monitor for my desktop, and a 17" LCD screen on my (heavy! and large!) laptop, both with 1920x1200 pixels - the 1024x600 resolution will seem mighty cramped at first. I wish it were just a tad larger, say 1280x800, but...I'd have to get a 12.1" for that, and none seem to have the combination of features that this little jewel has. I am learning to pop up just one screen up at a time, and to maximize them. This has not proved to be a serious deficiency yet for business and programming use.
The overall construction, fit and finish is great. The LCD screen although small is very viewable with much less fading out from an angle than many other laptops. The built-in camera and microphone work well (Oovoo is great for 3-way or more teleconferences). Sound quality is better than what you'd expect for a netbook this size. The two-finger control for the pad for scrolling and re-sizing is very useful although I still pack a mouse. The buttons on the pad work well when one presses them from the front where your thumb naturally lies when using the pad, rather than trying to press them from above. And the misplacement of the shift key on the right is not an issue for me as I always have used only the left shift key. Battery life is consistently reported at near 5 hours, not the 7 hours they claim, but I have yet to try it out for even that long.
Overall this is a great value for the money, if you can live with the small, limited resolution screen. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat if anything happened to mine, but I wish they'd make a just slightly larger 12.1" version!
