You get what you pay for October 16, 2008 There is a reason this MP3 player is under $50. My 8 year old received one for his birthday last month and it's even frustrating him. First of all, as everyone else has mentioned, the music is horribly jumbled. It is nearly impossible to find what you're looking for without wanting to throw the thing out the window. Although it is supposed to support playlists, we have so far been unable to get any to load on the player. We have tried using the HORRIBLE software that came with the player, Windows Media Player, and copy/pasting the playlist file directly into the "Playlist" folder on the device with no results. Although the device claims to support audiobooks, it doesn't tell you that it only supports them if they are purchased from Audible. Audiobooks we previously purchased for him on CD from the bookstore are automatically sorted into the music category, and with no way to organize them, the tracks play in random order making it pointless to even attempt books with this player. It takes this player an absurdly long time to boot up or shut down. The built-in USB is nice if you have USB ports on the face of your computer case, but an extension cord would have been a nice inclusion for those of us with rear-mounted ports. It's a pain to have to fumble around in the small space behind my computer trying to fit the plug into a port I can't see. All in all, it plays music so it deserves a little credit, but very little. Don't buy it unless you have very low standards.
A player without a prayer September 26, 2008 My issues are straightforward enough:
-Remains endlessly in "Shutting down" mode until battery is removed.
-File structure in player is unpredictably and nonsensically scrambled
-Flip-out USB connector fails to communicate with computer at all after very limited use
And this is the second unit to perform this way; the first was returned to the store.
no microSD slot September 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The black 1GB model does not have a microSD slot as described above. The blue 2GB model does, however...
An entry level MP3 for an entry price. September 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was looking for a budget MP3 player and found exactly that with RCA's Pearl. Let me start off by saying I never used the SD card reader so I can't report on that, but many of the problems listed in the other reviews are accurate. The main problems I have with it are:
1) It doesn't sort files very efficiently....or not at all.
2) The max volume is quite low in comparison to other MP3s I looked at.
3) When you do turn it off it has a habit of staying stuck in power down mode - roughly 80% of the time - and if you're unaware of it, your battery life (which is low to begin with) will be almost non existent.
O.K. with the bad out of the way, let's look to the good. If all you're looking for is an MP3 player this does an adequate job. It has sufficient memory (1GB) It is easy to load your favorite songs into the unit - just flip out the USB port and plug it into your computer, open the drive and drag your MP3s into the drive. Simple. Now that I think about it, that really is the only good point....oh well. If you want an entry level MP3 player for an entry price, the RCA Pearl isn't a bad place to look (or listen, as the case may be)
simply great!! September 7, 2008 Great mp3 starter for all those new in this technology (like me...), plus have FM tunnig so it'a plus for the price.
