Loved the original Pixter model, but not this one... January 20, 2008 My son had received the earlier Color Pixter model about 3 years ago for his birthday and loved it right away. Very soon after, however I had a very hard time finding cartridges as they were not available. Although I have found some on Ebay.
Overall the Pixter was great. But after nearly 3 years, it finally wore out and I managed to get this new Multimedia version at a lower price (about $30) than the original retail (around $80). It's a good thing too, because even with new cartridges like Walking with Dinosaurs which has great video, the operation of the Pixter has been sporadic. Now he is frustrated because the Spongebob Video cartridge (which was purchased brand new) is freezing in the exact same spot every time he tries to watch it.
I was hesitating on going with the Leapster because he already had so many Pixter cartridges, and the leapster L-Max is still very expensive. I was afraid that as soon as I purchase the L-Max, that would be discontinued quickly. Maybe we should have spent the money after all.
We love this toy in our family!!! October 28, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I can't figure out why this toy has been discontinued. Not only does my 4 year old daughter love this but I really enjoy the creating "creative" pictures on it. The software is both, fun and entertaining. It makes long car rides go by quickly!! We also allow our daughter to play with it at restaurants when we are waiting for dinner to be served. She loves it & so do we. Her favorite software is Cars, Mazes, and Arcade.
Avoid at all costs!!! September 25, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I can't emphasize enough how terrible this product is. We purchased this from Toys R' Us just before Christmas 2006 because they had them on clearance to get rid of them. We gave it to our son almost 6 months later for his birthday and it has been junk since day one.
The slightest bumps will cause the system to restart and/or cause the screen to start flashing sporadically. Getting a game to work is really luck of the draw. I have noticed that if you spend several seconds blowing into the cartridge and put it in just right with maybe a slight wiggle to get that perfect adjustment it MAY work for 15 minutes or so but eventually it WILL get crazy and restart repeatedly EVERY time your child plays with it.
Now, if my son didn't love it so much I would have just tossed it. But, I kept feeding the thing 4 brand new AA batteries every other week hoping he'd move on to something else. Finally it got to the point where I just took it away because he was getting so extremely frustrated with it. I even bought him a Leapster and several games which was a fraction of the cost of Pixter's retail value. So far I am incredibly impressed with Leapster. The graphics are better, sound is better, games are more intuitive, games are more FUN and actually make sense, the system is smaller and lighter, there's a build in screen protector, I could go on forever.
My son loves Leapster, but he still asks for Pixter, usually when he's done with Leapster. Thus I can't throw Pixter away because he would be devastated. I figured that I owed Fisher Price a phone call to get a replacement after suffering with this thing for over 6 months.
Fisher Price has TERRIBLE customer service. They have no skills in empathy or compassion and basically called me a liar. They refused to replace the system but after 45 minutes of back and forth they finally agreed to give me a $20 voucher. I appreciated that, but it doesn't fix my situation. I did get out of the rep that Pixter has been discontinued and that this is probably why. After talking to her, I realize that getting a new Pixter would probably just get me right back to where I am now so I took the $20. For this reason alone, I will never buy Fisher Price products again. I have had to call to replace toys a total of 3 times prior to this incident, and never once did I have anything less than total courtesy, understanding and helpfulness. This was from Melissa & Doug, Wild Republic and Leapfrog. With that kind of service out there, who needs to be talked down to and belittled by Fisher Price? Not me, especially not for this piece of garbage.
AVOID!!!!!!
